Blair Magnet News: Spring 2018
Magnet students won several major awards this spring!
Ocean Science Bowl: Blair's team won the 2018 National Ocean Sciences Bowl! The students on the winning team are Junior Laura Cui, and Seniors Noah Singer, David Wu, Elliot Kienzle, and Anish Senapati. Blair's Ocean Science Bowl teams are coached by Mr. Pham. The students qualified after winning the Chesapeake Bay Bowl in February, and at the national finals in Boulder, Colorado, they bested 22 teams from around the country in a double-elimination tournament to take the top prize! As winners, Blair's team will receive all-expenses paid trips to Florida where they will visit SeaWorld, Mote Marine Laboratory, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute, and Discovery Cove.
Presidential Scholar: Senior Michael Yin is a 2018 Presidential Scholar!
Regeneron Science Talent Search: Seniors Sarah Gao, Andrew Komo, David Wu, and Alice Zhang were finalists in the 2018 Regeneron Science Talent Search, and David finished in fifth place, winning a $90,000 scholarship. Sarah, Andrew, and Alice received $25,000 scholarships. They presented their research in March for a panel of judges and at a public poster session (@MsBosseBlair). Junior Daniel Schaffer and Senior Mengming Luo were grand prize winners, and they are representing Montgomery County at ISEF in Pittsburgh, May 17-18.
Seniors Mikaela Moore and Emma Schillerstrom were ISEF alternates - they completed their SRP on Wallops Island.
In the Biology category, in addition to Daniel Schaffer, Srish Udayakumar and Tarun Mattikalli also won first place prizes.
In the Physics category, Alex Wang and Steven Qu won first place prizes.
In the Engineering category, Mehana Daftary won a first place prize. Mehana was also a finalist at Georgetown JSHS (@MsBosseBlair).

Senior Ryan Holland won a 2018 Minds In Motion Scholar-Athlete Scholarship
Senior Laura Espinoza was recognized as one of Bethesda Magazine's Top Teens
Junior Mindy Burton won the Congressional Award for Maryland's 3rd Congressional District
Wendy Shi, Shreeya Khurana, Nobline Yoo, and Alice Zhang were recognized with Awards for Aspirations in Computing from the National Center for Women & Information Technology (@MsBosseBlair)
Three teams from Blair were among the top 5 in the nation in the Girls Go CyberStart competition. Eleven Blair teams were among the top 100.

Five Magnet students are US Biology Olympiad semifinalists (@MsBosseBlair)
