Magnet News: Fall 2014

Magnet students have won several honors this fall:

  • Katherine Wu '18 won second place, a $1,000 prize and a trip to Costa Rica, in the 2014 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge. She was also selected as one of 30 finalists in the 2014 Broadcom MASTERS Competition. She was recently interviewed by the Washington Post. She was also interviewed by the Gazette earlier in October and was featured in another Washington Post story in August.

  • Matthew Yu '16 was named a regional finalist in the 2014 Siemens Competition (pdf). Qingning Fan '15, Sangho Myung '15, Eric Neyman '15, Arjuna Subramanian '15, and Brenda Wu '15 were also named semifinalists.

  • Ishaan Parikh '15 was selected as one of twelve young scientists to travel to Germany from the United States as winners of the Goethe-Institut's "Discover a New Path" Contest

  • The Blair senior class has 32 National Merit Scholar Semifinalists, including both Magnet and non-Magnet students: Andrea Brown, Mari-Therese Burton, Adam Busis, Rosa Choe, Theodore Corrales, Matthew Das Sarma, Calvin Dong, Eli Hartman, Wesley Hopkins, Anna Keleher, Brianna Kitts, Jingce Lei, Ziyu Liu, Elisabeth Machielse, Samantha Menegas, Bendeguz Offertaler, Benjamin Safford, Harini Salgado, Aditi Subramanian, Arjuna Subramanian, Sarah Wagner, Kara Watkins-Chow, Michael Winer, Brenda Wu, Jingjing Xu, Victor Xu, Wen Qing Xu, Catherine Xue, Dennis Yang, Austin Yuan, Kevin Zhang, and Harrison Zheng.

  • 3 Blair students were named National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalists, including two Magnet students. The Blair Class of 2015 National Achievement Scholarship Semifinalists are Meriel Caprioglio-Chase, Landon Harris, and Braeden Rose.

  • Twenty-one Magnet students qualified for Round Two of the Who Wants to be a Mathematician competition, which was more than any high school in the country: Adam Busis, Sambuddha Chattopadhyay, Josh Fernandes, Raymond Lin, Cynthia Liu, Eric Lu, Jesse Matthews, Alex Miao, Eric Neyman, Jyotsna Rao, Pratik Rathore, Dilhan Salgado, Anish Senapati, Noah Singer, Siddharth Taneja, Vijay Upadhya, Michael Winer, Victor Xu, Annie Zhao, Dennis Zhao, and Lawrence Zhao.
