At the spring meeting of the Magnet Foundation Board of Directors, several issues were discussed:
Magnet Pipeline Project: The Magnet Foundation is partnering with local organizations to create a program that will provide targeted math tutoring to a select group of underrepresented students at the elementary school level.
The MCPS Choice Study recommended that MCPS special programs should seek to enroll a more diverse population, and the Board believes that the best way to achieve this goal is to focus on early education to create a more diverse pipeline of students in MCPS who can be prepared for the challenges of the Magnet Program.
If you are interested in learning more about this project or know of local organizations who might want to get involved, please contact board@mbhsmagnet.org.
Fundraising: The Foundation ran a small deficit for the first time last year, and the Board is planning to take a more active approach towards fundraising. An alumnus in Silicon Valley is helping the Foundation to develop software to make donating easier and more transparent.
Scholarship: The Board approved the award of the Blair Leaders in Science Scholarship to Alexandra Dagunts, who will attend George Washington University in the fall.
The Board approved the following grants:
$2,430 to cover registration fees and chaperone travel costs for the ACSL All-Star team
$2,000 to register Montgomery County's five ARML teams
$912.50 to help a teacher take a Marine Biology and Oceanography teaching course over the summer
Up to $200 to fund prizes for the Cyber Security Club's CTF competition.
