Magnet News: Winter 2009

2009 was another year full of Magnet honors:
  • May 2009: Anand Oza scored a perfect 2400 on the March SAT Exam.  He was interviewed by NBC News.
  • October 23, 2009: The Siemens Foundation announced Finalists and Semifinalists for 2009.  The Magnet had 3 Regional Finalists (pdf): Roger Curley, Jennifer Wang, and Dalton Wu.  The Magnet also had 11 Semifinalists (pdf): Allison Arai, Jacob Hurwitz, Victoria Lai, Haozhi Lin, Nils Molina, Kamal Ndousse, Anand Oza, Rohan Puttagunta, Elissa Shiau, Hongyi Xia, and Yi Xiao.
  • October 30, 2009: Anand Oza, Devin Zhang, Mario Choi, and Nils Molina won $80,000 scholarships by scoring in the top 10 at the Colonial Math Challenge at George Washington University.  The Blair team of Anand Oza, Devin Zhang, Jacob Hurwitz, and Mario Choi won second place in the team competition.
  • November 16, 2009: The Blair Magnet Team composed of Andrew Das Sarma, Jacob Hurwitz, Anand Oza, Rohan Puttagunta, Chenyu Zhao, and David Tolnay, tied for first place in the Student Programming Contest at the SC09 Conference in Portland, Oregon.
  • December 1, 2009: Scott Yu '10 won the 2009 Junior Achievement Essay Competition.
  • December 3, 2009: A team of approximately 160 students from Montgomery Blair High School finished first among 678 high schools  in the 53rd Knowledge Master Open, the largest high school academic tournament in America
  • December 19, 2009: Sophia Deng and Jacob Hurwitz were named 2010 JSHS Finalists for the Greater Washington Region.
  • December 21, 2009: The team of Anand Oza, Nils Molina, and Rohan Puttagunta won Honorable Mention and a cash award of over $4,000 at the final competition for the S.-T. Yau High School Mathematics Award in Beijing, China.  Their project, “Sane Bounds on Van Der Waerden-Type Numbers,” was conducted under the guidance of Dr. William Gasarch, Professor of Computer Science at the University of Maryland College Park.
