Magnet News: Summer 2014

At the end of the school year, the Gazette reported on several activities at Blair:
Many students won honors at the end of the school year and over the summer:
  • Alexander Bourzutschky '14 and Michael Winer '15 were members of the 2014 U.S. Physics Team, and they traveled to Kazahstan where they won silver medals at the International Physics Olympiad.
  • Huey Shih '14 was named a Presidential Scholar
  • Adrienne Kehne '14 and Neil Gahart '14 were named to the Washington Post Spring All-Met Teams.  Adrienne was First-Team All-Met in rowing, and Neil received an Honorable Mention in baseball.  Another Blair graduate, Annie Pietenza '14, was also named Second-Team All-Met in softball. 
  • Dennis Zhao '15 had one of twelve perfect individual scores in the nation at the 2014 ARML competition.
  • Blair's team had the top score in Division 2 (second-year or higher Physics students) in the 2014 AAPT Physics Bowl competition. (pdf)  Michael Winer '15 and Alexander Bourzoutschky '14 had the second and fourth-highest individual scores in Division 2.
  • Matthew Das Sarma '15, Alan Du '14, Avikar Periwal '14, Victoria Tsai '15, and Victor Xu '15 won the Student Modeling and Simulation Challenge at the 2014 XSEDE Conference competing against several college teams.
  • MdBio Foundation named Neil Davey '14 the winner of the 2014 Maryland BioGENEius Challenge.
  • Caitlyn Singam '16 was honored for Student Accomplishment in Gifted and Talented Education by the Maryland State Advisory Council for Gifted and Talented Education. (pdf)
  • Jared Lichtman '14 was one of 13 Maryland students to receive a 2014 Minds in Motion Scholarship from The Allstate Foundation.
  • Nathan Schilling '14 was one of 23 recipients of a $10,000 scholarship from the Northrup Grumman Engineering Scholars Program.
  • Cynthia Liu '16 won Honorable Mention for her essay and poem in Writopia's 2014 Scholastic Writing Awards.
Silver Chips also reported on several activities:
  • A group of students led by science teachers Megan Hart, Eric Prange, and John Haigh III attended the X-STEM Conference in Washington, DC on April 24th.
  • Puzzlepalooza V was held on May 19-22, with more than 320 students participating on 19 different teams.
